The age-old assertion that “A person cannot be born gay,” true or not, has served as a burdensome shackle around the neck of the black church, producing a phobia that impedes its ability to focus on the task of making disciples as commanded by the Lord Jesus Christ.

We must confront the reality that irrespective of the cause of homosexuality, whether it is genetic or social, it is indeed a growing presence in our families, community, and churches. As such, it is a threat that we cannot simply ignore or think that we can pray away.
